
The word "gadget," which has its roots in English, describes a small electrical device with a specific purpose. Gadgets have an element of "novelty" that sets them apart from other electronic equipment. This means that on a daily basis, gadgets seem to offer the most cutting-edge technology that makes human existence more practical. Gadgets related to recent technology advancements, like computers, tablets, and smartphones.1
When introducing technology to youngsters, every parent needs to exercise caution. The reason is that modern technology is a double-edged sword that can affect kids' growth and development both favorably and unfavorably. IDAI suggests the following when it comes to children and technology.2
- Babies aged 0 - 6 months should not be introduced to gadgets
- Babies aged between 1-2 years can be introduced but not for more than 1 hour per day
- Children up to 6 years old can use gadgets but must always be supervised by their parents
- Ages > 6 years may only use programs that are safe for their age, and use gadgets for no more than 3 hours per day
There are both beneficial and bad effects of gadget use on children's growth and development. Children's learning process, the development of their adaptive function to the environment and latest developments, increasing knowledge, the expansion of their social circles, the facilitation of communication, and the development of children creativity are all positive effects.3
Even if there are numerous advantages, it is important to think about the potential risks when introducing technology to kids. There are some negative effects, including: having trouble focusing and concentrating, having sleep disorders and anxiety levels, vision issues, raising the risk of obesity and aggressive behavior, impeding the development of language and social skills, and endangering the child's psychological development.4
Parents should take the following steps to benefit from devices and minimize potential hazards :5
- Avoid using gadget for children under 5 years old
- Accompany children while playing
- Limit children's screen time
- Pay attention to the content they access and choose according to your child's age
- Encourage kids to engage in positive activities
- Avoid using devices right before bed
- Spend time with family
