Prevent Smelly Breath During Fasting, It's Easy!

Fasting in Ramadan is a spiritual moment that Muslims look forward. However, smelly breath or halitosis is often a concern during fasting. This is natural because saliva production is reduced, so that food waste and bacteria more easily accumulate in the mouth and cause unpleasant odors.1

Causes of Smelly Breath During Fasting

Below are some causes of smelly breath, such as:

1. Release of ketones

When fasting, the body burns fat as energy, producing ketones. Ketones mixed with bacteria in the mouth can produce an unpleasant odor.

2. Dehydration

Lack of fluid intake causes saliva production during fasting to decrease drastically, making the mouth dry (xerostomia), and bacteria more easily to multiply, causing smelly breath.

Tips to Prevent Smelly Breath During Fasting:

Don't worry! Smelly breath during fasting can be prevented easily. Here are some tips that you can apply:

1. Drink an adequate amount of water

Consume water during suhoor, iftar, and before bedtime at night. Sufficient water intake will increase saliva production, keeping the body well hydrated and preventing dry mouth, thus minimizing the risk of smelly breath.

2. Increase consumption of fruits and vegetables

Consuming fruit and vegetables could boost up saliva production to keep the mouth moist, also clean the oral area from bacteria that cause unpleasant odor and plaque.

3. Brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste

Brushing your tteth at least twice a day to prevent bacteria that cause smelly breath and plaque from multiplying in the mouth.

4. Avoid smoking

Smoking habbit can increase the risk of the mouth becoming drier and reducing the amount of saliva in the mouth. When this happens, the risk of smelly breath during fasting can be higher.

5. Avoid foods or drinks with high sugar 

Consume sweet food or drinks during iftar and suhoor, could leave residue that can stick to the teeth then bacteria multiply causes smelly breath.

6. Avoid strongly aromatic foods

Consume strong aromatic foods such as onions or jengkol, especially during suhoor can cause smelly breath.

7. Consult a Dentist

If bad breath still present after applying the above tips, do consultation with a dentist to help you find the cause of bad breath and provide the right solution.
