Eid al-Adha is synonymous with meat consumption. On this day, each family head typically has a large stock of sacrificial meat. It's common for families to hold meat feasts during the celebration. However, if not balanced with healthy foods, excessive meat consumption can lead to various serious health problems.
Meat is rich in protein and iron, which are essential for the body. However, meat also contains high levels of fat and cholesterol. Excessive consumption can negatively impact the body, leading to digestive issues, hypercholesterolemia, or cardiovascular diseases. In addition to its nutritional content, the processing of meat must also be considered. Following hygiene rules during meat preparation can minimize nutrient loss and eliminate disease risk factors.
Things to Consider Before Preparing Sacrificial Meat
If you plan to consume meat, pay attention to storage and processing methods to obtain the benefits from meat. Here are some important considerations:
- How to Choose Meat for Consumption
Choose the part of the meat with less fat such as the back thigh, front thigh, sirloin (outer has), or loin. Choose meat that is fresh red in color and clean. Avoid meat that is brownish, slimy, or dirty looking because it indicates that the meat is not fresh and not suitable for consumption. Make sure the meat comes from healthy sacrificial animals and is inspected by medical personnel or authorized authorities before slaughter.
1. Ensure cleanliness and sanitation
Make sure the meat cutting and processing areas are clean. Use sharp and clean knives, as well as sterile plates, tools and surfaces. Wash your hands with soap and running water before and after handling the meat. Also wash the meat to be cooked with running water before the cooking process. This aims to avoid bacterial contamination that can cause health problems such as diarrhea or food poisoning. Always make sure the meat is not contaminated by other foodstuffs, especially raw foods such as vegetables or fruits.
2. The correct way to store meat
After cutting, separate the meat by type and body part. Refrigerate the meat immediately to keep it fresh, by storing it in the refrigerator at 1 degree Celsius or in the freezer at -18 degrees Celsius. Make sure the sacrificial meat is dry before storing it in the freezer and put it in a tightly sealed container to avoid cross-contamination with other foods, as well as to prevent the growth of unwanted bacteria. In addition, pay attention to the storage temperature to keep the meat fresh, will preserve the nutrients and extend the shelf life of the meat. To thaw frozen meat, move it from the freezer to the refrigerator. This prevents the growth of bacteria in the meat during the thawing process.
3. Avoid Consuming Raw or Undercooked Sacrificial Meat
Avoid consuming raw or undercooked sacrificial meat as it can cause bacterial infections such as E. coli or Salmonella. Ensure the meat is thoroughly cooked before consumption. When marinating the meat before cooking, use safe ingredients such as uncontaminated spices and herbs. By adhering to these precautions, you can enjoy your meat safely and healthily
4. Healthy Meat Processing Tips
Another important aspect to consider is the method of meat processing. Here are some tips for processing and consuming meat in a healthy way:
- Avoid parts of meat with high fat content
Remove all layers of fat from the meat before processing it. It's best to choose parts (such as the neck and thighs) that contain less fat than other parts. Also, for those who already have high cholesterol problems, only consume the meat part. Avoid the innards such as intestines, spleen, tripe, liver, or torpedoes. These parts contain much higher cholesterol than meat.
- Choose grilled over fried
Grilling meat is a healthy preparation method but cut the meat into small pieces to limit heat exposure time, and remove all visible fat to prevent it from falling into the embers and forming harmful substances. Marinade the meat with vinegar and lemon before grilling to reduce the formation of such harmful substances. Also, use a stovetop or oven instead of hot charcoal for grilling, to reduce the risk of potentially cancer-causing carcinogens.
- Add fiber in the form of vegetables and fruits
To make meat dishes healthier, gut-friendly, and easier to digest, incorporate more vegetables into dishes with meat, such as potatoes, carrots, peas, broccoli, and others. Adding fiber content plays an important role in maintaining digestive health and fat absorption. Additionally, fruits also help prevent cravings for sweet foods and make someone feel fuller for longer.
- Avoid the use of harmful additives
It's best to avoid using ready-made sauces, instant seasonings, and flavor enhancers as they contain salt, sugar, and unhealthy chemicals. It's better to opt for natural seasonings such as spices, garlic, ginger, and fresh herbs to add delicious flavor to the meat for Eid al-Adha sacrifice.
Enjoying healthy and nutritious Qurbani meat dishes is an important step in maintaining good health during the Eid al-Adha celebration. By choosing, processing, and consuming Qurbani meat wisely, we can celebrate Eid al-Adha joyfully while maintaining nutritional balance and good health.
Happy Eid al-Adha!
