
Eid al-Fitr is a moment that indicates the end of the Ramadan and interpreted as a day of victory because we successfully gone through a full month of fasting and avoided all restrictions during fasting.1 In addition, the celebration of Eid al-Fitr are always filled with a variety of appetizing food menus. The combination of various spices and other food ingredients produces delicious food. Opor ayam, rendang, ketupat, and various other regional specialties are examples of Eid food dishes that could increase body weight and pose a risk to your health.
Tips for Keeping Body Healthy During Eid
Here are various ways that can do to keep your body healthy during Eid:2,3,4,5
- Control your diet
Pay attention to and regulate the portion of food that you consumed, especially foods that contain excessive coconut milk (e.g. rendang and opor) and oil (e.g. deep fried foods). Eating small amounts of foods will reduce the risk of digestive disorders, especially when you have to visit several relatives' houses in a day so you could not set your meal times.
- Consumption of fruits and vegetables
Vegetables and fruits contain fiber, vitamins and minerals which have various benefits, such as lowering cholesterol and blood sugar levels, also improving the digestive system. Starting Eid al-Fitr with fruits and vegetables can also control your appetite so you could control the portion of food you are going to consume.
- Drink enough
During visits to family homes, drinking enough water could overcome dehydration and help to limit your consumption of sugary drinks so that you don't gain weight and increase of blood sugar levels.
- Stop when full
Various foods and drinks during Eid will increase appetite. However, after feeling full, stop consuming these foods and drinks so they do not interfere with the digestive system and exceed the nutritional intake limit needed by the body.
- Lots of walking
Walking while in touch with family can help burn calories from the food that you consumed. Try to park your vehicle with quite a long distanc from the family home or walk if it is not far from your home.
