World Immunization Week, celebrated annually in the last week of April, aims to use a vaccine to protect everyone against a disease. WHO states that immunization can save millions of lives every year and is widely one of the most successful health interventions in the world.
Immunizations or vaccines are known to safely and effectively come from small amounts of viruses or bacteria that are attenuated or killed or pieces of protein modified in the laboratory to mimic the original bacteria, viruses. Vaccines are useful for preventing infection by the same virus or bacteria. When the body gets immunized it will trigger an immune response so that it can produce antibodies against disease and can increase immunity
When a child gets a disease, the vaccine protects by forming antibodies so that it can protect against the disease. Vaccines will usually prevent disease or reduce its severity. Immunization protects us from serious illnesses and also prevents the disease from spreading to other people. Over the years immunizations have thwarted epidemics of once common infectious diseases such as measles, mumps and whooping cough.
The benefit of immunization is to be able to avoid diseases that can cause serious health problems. The recommended immunizations for children aged 0-6 years include: Hepatitis B, Rotavirus, Diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, Haemophilus influenzae type B, pneumonia, polio virus, influenza, measles, mumps, rubella, varicella (chickenpox), hepatitis A and meningococcal (for certain high-risk groups).
Apart from immunization, there are many ways to increas the immune system in children, it is :
- Get enough sleep, sleep and immunity are closely related. In fact, poor sleep quality is associated with a higher susceptibility to disease.
- Eat more whole plant foods. Whole plant foods like fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and legumes are rich in nutrients and antioxidants that can help fight harmful pathogens.
- Limit added sugar. Research shows that added sugars and carbohydrates can contribute disproportionately to overweight and obesity in children. Obesity may likewise increase your risk of getting sick.
- Engage in moderate exercise. Moderate exercise can reduce inflammation and promote healthy immune cell turnover.
- Take Vitamin C and Zinc supplements which have been shown to strengthen the immune response. One product that is well known for its properties that can strengthen a child's immune system is Imunped which is a supplement that contains vitamin C and zinc sulfate.
