The Covid-19 virus is still a scourge on the world, although its spread and severity are much smaller. To date, Covid-19 continues to produce new variants. Omicron EG.5, also known as Eris, is a variation of XBB.1.9.2, a sublineage of the virus that has additional mutations in its spike protein.1,2
This subvariant quickly multiplied and developed into the main form of Covid-19 globally. The Eris varian has spread significantly in the UK and entered Indonesia since March 2023. The 'Eris' version is classified by WHO as a variant under monitoring (VUM), due to its widespread causing increased number of Covid-19 cases in many countries. Covid 'Eris' has mutated or changed shape and become different gradually.1
According to data from the Emerging Infections website, there was a spike in Covid-19 cases in Indonesia throughout November 2023. Compared with the beginning of October 2023, there was an increase in cases of up to 58.9%.4
As with other Covid variants, the risk of serious illness is still higher in older adults and those with significant medical disorders. People with a weakened immune system or 65 years of age or older are more vulnerable to the virus spreading into the lower respiratory tract, and causing severe illness.3
Symptoms of Covid-19 Subvariant EG.5 Eris
The Eris variant has similar symptoms to the Omicron variant. Among these signs are: 5.
- Headache
- Fever
- Cough
- Fatigue
- Sore throat
- Muscle ache
- Loss of taste and smell
- Nasal congestion
- Difficulty breathing
The following preventive actions can be taken against the Covid-19 virus, including the Covid “Eris” variant:5
1. Get Vaccinated: Vaccines play a very important role in reducing the risk of contracting COVID-19, including the Eris variant.
2. Use a mask: Covering your face with a mask, especially when you are in crowded and closed places, will helps minimize transmission of the Covid-19 virus.
3. Keep Your Distance: When an infected person coughs or sneezes, the virus can spread through droplets. The risk of transmission can be reduced by keeping a minimum of one meter between you and other persons.
4. Hand Washing: It's critical to routinely wash your hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and water.
5. Steer clear of Crowds: The risk of virus transmission is higher in crowded places. As much as possible, avoid crowded areas unless it is absolutely necessary, to minimize the risk of exposure to the virus.
Implementing these preventive measures into practice could significantly reduce the risk of virus transmission, including the Eris variant, improving everyone's safety and wellbeing.5
