Manuel P. Engwa

President Director

A citizen of the Philippines, born in 1949. Finished the Honors Program in Economics at Xavier University in 1969 and attended the Masters Program in Industrial Economics in 1972 in a think tank which is now part of the University of Asia and the Pacific in Manila, Philippines.

Between 1988 and 2002 he served as the General Manager and Director of PT Medifarma Laboratories. He has also been the Senior Vice President for Regional Operations of United Laboratories, Inc. He serves as a Director in a number of pharmaceutical companies affiliated with the Unilab Group of Companies.

He joined PT Darya-Varia Laboratoria Tbk as President Director in June 2002.

 

Charles Robert B. Davis
Vice-President Director

A citizen of the Philippines, born in 1961, Mr. Davis completed his university studies at the University of the Philippines where he earned the degree of Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering in 1984. He joined Intel Philippines Manufacturing Incorporated as a Cost Engineer from 1984 to 1986 before taking up  post-graduate studies at the Asian Institute of Management where he earned a Masters in Business Management degree in 1988 (Dean’s List).

From 1988 to 1995, Mr. Davis moved to Marketing and worked his way up to eventually serve as Marketing Manager of Zuellig Inchcape Incorporated, a joint venture between Inchcape Plc and Zuellig Distribution, a leading pharmaceutical distributor in Southeast Asia.

In late 1995, Mr. Davis re-located to Indonesia and joined PT Sanghiang Perkasa, a subsidiary of PT Kalbe Farma Tbk, Indonesia’s largest pharmaceutical and health care company, as a Marketing Director until he became its Managing Director in 1998. In 1999, he was appointed as Managing Director of The Woods’ Division of PT Kalbe Farma Tbk, where he was charged with the overall management of Woods’ operations in 12 countries located in Asia and Africa.

He joined The United Laboratories Group, a major pharmaceutical company in South East Asia, based in the Philippines in 2002 and was first assigned as Director of Ethical Business and Director of Business Development for PT Darya-Varia Laboratoria Tbk, and its affiliate, PT Medifarma Laboratories. In 2005, he was promoted to Country Manager of United Pharma (Vietnam) Incorporated. In early 2008, Mr. Davis was moved back to Indonesia to serve as General Manager of PT Medifarma Laboratories with concurrent responsibility for the operations of the Company, under the Synergy Agreement entered into by the Company in 2003. He was appointed as Vice-President Director of the Company in June 2008. 

 

Mariano John L. Tan, Jr
Director

Born in the Philippines in 1962, Mr Tan studied in his younger years in the Philippines and completed his education in the United States.  He earned a BA in Economics & Business at the Lafayette College, Pennsylvania in 1983 and a Master of Science in Management at the Hult International Business School, Arthur D. Little Institute of Management, Massachusetts in 1986.

Mr Tan started his professional career with Citibank, New York, USA as a Management Trainee.  He joined the United Laboratories Inc., the leading pharmaceutical concern in the Philippines, in 1984 as Vice President & Executive Officer and today serves as Vice Chairman of the Board.  He currently holds senior management positions in other large corporations in the Philippines, including Vice Chairman of Greenfield Development Corporation, a large property development company; Chairman & President, Pacific Beacon Ventures Corporation; Chairman & President, Dolmar Property Ventures Inc, a property holding company; and Partner & Director of Initiative Management Group Inc.      

In socio-civic affairs, Mr Tan is heavily involved particularly as Trustee & President of Fides Foundation Inc., a non-profit foundation devoted to providing for the needs of abandoned elderly residents of the City of Manila’s Home for the Aged, where he also renders volunteer work; Member of the Executive Committee of the Xavier School Parents Auxiliary, which works with the school administrators to plan and execute parents’ programs and activities; and Member of the Financial Executives Institute of the Philippines. He joined the Company as Director in June 2005.

 

Eric Albert Gotuaco
Director

Mr. Eric Albert Gotuaco was born in the Philippines in 1968.  He completed his secondary schooling at Xavier School, Manila in 1986.

 

He attended university at The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, U.S.A., graduating in 1990 with a B.S. in Economics, Magna Cum Laude. At Penn, he was active in the Penn Philippine Student Association, Sponsors for Educational Opportunity and the University of Pennsylvania Student Federal Credit Union.  He is currently Chairman of the Alumni Secondary School Committee, where he coordinates the university’s Philippine recruiting efforts.

 

Mr. Gotuaco worked at Goldman, Sachs & Co. in New York as an Analyst in the Structured Finance Group of the Investment Banking Division in 1989; and again in 1990-1992.  He was an Associate at Hambrecht & Quist Philippines, Inc., a venture capital fund manager, in 1992 to 1993.

 

He founded and organized First Choice Food Corporation in 1993, now a major biscuit company in the Philippines.  He served as President & General Manager from 1993-2002. 

 

Mr. Gotuaco served on the Board of Directors at Metro Rail Transit Corporation from 2006 to early 2009.

 

In 2002, he joined United Laboratories, Inc., the leading pharmaceutical company in the Philippines, and is currently Corporate Vice President with primary responsibility over treasury investments.  Mr. Gotuaco currently serves as Director on the boards of on a number of United associated companies, Greenfield Development Corporation, and Carmen Copper Corporation. He joined the Company as Director in June 2006.

 

Marlia Hayati Goestam
Director

Citizen of Indonesia, born in 1961. Ms. Goestam obtained her Law degree from the Atma Jaya Catholic University in Jakarta, Indonesia in 1985. She first worked at PT Wina Mulia, Bouraq Cargo. Afterwards, she joined PT Pradja Farma Hoslab, the former distribution company of PT Pradja Pharin (Prafa) in 1986 as Personnel Manager before taking responsibility as the Head of the Legal Bureau of PT Puspa Eka Pradiantara, the holding company of the Pradja Group in 1989. After Prafa was acquired by PT Darya-Varia Laboratoria Tbk in 1996, she was appointed as Legal Affairs Manager of the Darya-Varia Group and served as Director of the other subsidiary companies of the group. She was appointed as Director of PT Darya-Varia Laboratoria Tbk in February 2002 and until June 2009, she was the Corporate Secretary of the Company. For two consecutive periods, she had been a member of the Ethics Code Board of the Indonesia Pharmaceutical Industry Association, and until now she is still a member of the Evaluation Team of the Indonesian Publicly-Listed Companies Association (AEI). She is also one of the founders of Indonesian Corporate Counsel Association.

 

Benjamin O. Yap
Director

A citizen of the Philippines, born in the 1950.  He is a Bachelor of Arts, major in Economics, graduate of the Ateneo de Manila University in Manila.

 

He completed the Strategic Business Economics Program at the Center for Research and Communication in Manila, and the Strategic Management Program at the Arthur D. Little Institute, USA.

 

He joined Unilab in 1973 as Business Analyst and Project Manager in the company’s internal consulting group, and subsequently  held the position of Assistant to the President from 1975-1979, responsible for the integration of  operations planning and control processes, during which time he formalized strategic planning in Unilab.

 

He was appointed as Assistant Vice President for Corporate Planning in 1979, served as Chief Planning Officer until 1989 while concurrently holding other positions, including Head of the Corporate Staff Group, Head of Corporate Communication Group and Vice Chairman of the Management Committee for External Affairs and Issues Management.

 

In 1989 he was appointed Vice President to support the Executive Committee and the Office of the President with oversight function and responsibility for the alignment of operational and policy initiatives in the areas of Ethical Marketing, Systems and Information Technology, and Total Quality Management. 

 

He was then appointed as Operating Vice President in 1996 to spearhead the company’s business process reengineering program focusing on Distribution and Supply Chain processes, leading the total redesign of Unilab’s supply chain network resulting in the consolidation of 18 provincial distribution centers into one world class RF-based facility in Manila and the streamlining of commercial and physical distribution processes and implementation of “best-of-breed” applications to integrate order processing, credit management and warehousing operations to provide real-time visibility across the supply chain.

 

During 1998 to 2005, he was Senior Vice President for Sales and Distribution responsible for Field Sales Operations, Trade Marketing, Logistics, Customer Care and special channel development groups for National Accounts, Modern Trade, Hospital and Institutional Accounts.

 

In 2006–2008, he was Corporate Senior Vice President and Head of Indochina Operations with profit and loss accountability for the Unilab Group’s affiliates in Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos.

 

He is currently Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of United Laboratories, Inc. He was appointed as Director of the Company in June 2009.

 

Carlos O. Nava
Director

Born in the Philippines in 1953.He graduated from De La Salle University (Manila) in 1975, Magna Cum Laude, with a Bachelor of Arts, major in Economics and Bachelor of Science. in Commerce, major in Accounting.

He passed the CPA board examinations in 1975 and is a licensed Certified Public Accountant in the Philippines in good standing.

Mr. Nava has over 30 years experience in the finance functions in major multinational and Philippine corporations engaged in consumer goods and agri-business. 

He started his career in Unilever Philippines in 1975 as a management trainee and assumed various finance positions in its Foods Division until 1982. 

He joined Pure Foods Corporation, a major processed meat and packaged foods concern in Manila, in 1982 as Manager – Poultry Accounting. 

He then headed Pure Foods’ internal audit group (1984-1987) and was later appointed as Group Manager, Poultry & Livestock Accounting.

He was Country Controller/CFO of Cargill Philippines, Inc and subsidiaries from 1988-1992 where he was responsible for financial reporting and oversight of Cargill’s trading positions in various commodities (e.g., coconut oil, molasses, grains and naphtha).  

Mr Nava also served as Finance Director for Kraft Foods Philippines, Inc (1992-1999) where he was responsible for financial reporting and business planning, treasury & export operations, internal audit and information technology. 

He joined United Laboratories Inc. in June 1999 and is currently the Senior Vice-President and CFO for International Operations. He joined the Company as Director in June 2009.
